Offroading UK

The Peak District is one of the best-loved national parks in the UK and boasts perfect terrain for a nice bit of rambling, cycling, horse-riding and…drum roll please…. off-roading with SUVs and 4X4s.
There are around 300 green lanes in the Peak District which are used for this purpose, though off-roading stokes up controversy as it disturbs wildlife, damages roads and can sometimes be illegal.
Consider yourself warned. You don’t want to have your collar felt by an English Bobby.
However, if you plan your trip carefully, there are lots of organisations that can help you enjoy the thrill that off-roading in the Peak District holds.

WHAT WE LEARNED WHILE OFF-ROADING IN A 4X4

Bring an Ordinance Survey map with you – there are only certain routes available. Don’t stray. We did and we soon felt the wrath of a local farmer. I was wiping rage-saliva off my face for about an hour afterwards. Also, don’t be a doofus – make sure your car is in good condition and has the right tyres. Most importantly, remember to take it easy. Colin McRae you ain’t.
We joined a local off-roading group who host play days at designated sites and they taught is the lay of the land. Preserving the green lanes is of upmost importance so if you want to experience a more thrilling ride.
If a lane looks dishevelled and on its last legs, then – quite simply – don’t drive down it.
We were also told to be kind to other lane users and report anyone driving without due care.
After you’ve finished for the day, you really become part of the community when you fill in a Green Lane Survey which updates the local authority on the condition of the lane.

OFF-ROAD CYCLING

A less controversial option for those more risk-averse to using a car or motorcycle off-road is mountain biking session through the green lanes.
Peak District Cycle Ways is a great resource for finding cycle paths as well as off-road mountain bike routes in the Peak District. Here are a few routes we worked out that supply the requite adrenalin kick and buenavistas.
